What is Christian Science?
History of Christian Science
Christian Science was discovered in 1866 by Mary Baker Eddy. Mrs. Eddy experienced a miraculous and instantaneous recovery from a nearly fatal injury. She attributed this healing to the power of prayer, but was unable to explain how exactly prayer had healed her. Over the next three years, she searched for an answer to this question. Her search led her to discover what she named Christian Science, the science of Christianity and its healing effects. She dedicated the next sixty years of her life to teaching, documenting, and practicing the healing nature of God, as taught by Christ Jesus. In 1875, she published Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures, a textbook that spiritually interprets the Bible and describes man's relationship to God. She also explains how the healing abilities of Jesus are for all mankind to demonstrate, as she did following her injury.
The study of Christian Science is not dependent on church membership, however, there are church members in over 130 countries around the world. There are democratically run churches in over 70 countries. The very first Church of Christ, Scientist was established in 1879.
